Pet Pain Relief Through Physical Rehabilitation

To best serve the needs of our pet patients, Harris Parkway Animal Hospital has a rehabilitation facility on site. Our mission is to enhance recovery, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of our orthopedic, neurologic, and aging patients. It is our desire to promote health, fitness, and quality of life for our companion animal pals.

Dr. Richard Young is a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT). He focuses on rehabilitation through physical therapy and pain management. The techniques he and his staff provide are very helpful in making injured and aging pets more comfortable, active, and happy.

Ft. Worth Animal Rehabilitation

A few years ago, Dr. Young broke his shoulder, had surgery, and underwent the physical therapy necessary afterward to make his shoulder work well again. He realized that as our pets age, or if they are injured, they need special care too. Pets that undergo surgery recover much better if they can be made comfortable and kept active. Physical therapy helps improve mobility and strength and lessens discomfort.

The benefits of physical therapy and rehabilitation have been shown in human medicine. We are committed to bringing these same benefits to our companion animals. Whether rehabilitation is post-surgical, following an injury, or for aging pets, we offer many treatments for conditions including the following:

  • Orthopedic conditions
    • Cruciate repairs (knee surgery)
    • Patellar luxation repairs (knee surgery)
    • Hip dysplasia and hip and fracture repairs
    • Arthritis and chronic pain because our older buddies suffer from osteoarthritis just as we people do
  • Neurologic injuries such as disc disease
    • Fibrocartilagenous emboli
    • Degenerative myelopathy
    • Nerve paralysis
  • Obesity, weight management, and general conditioning
  • Sports medicine
    • Wellness and fitness programs
    • Athletic conditioning and maintenance programs

We will assess your pet’s condition and develop a treatment plan based on the age, physical condition, type of injury, and your specific goals. To accomplish these goals, we use the most current innovations and technology, which might include:

  • Therapeutic ultrasound
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Magnetic therapy
  • Cold and heat therapies
  • Pain control
  • Therapeutic massage (ROM, STM, and general massage)
  • Low-level laser
  • Therapeutic equipment and exercise
  • Ambulation carts, assistive devices, and orthotics
  • Underwater treadmill

If you have ever been to physical therapy like Dr. Young, you know that you have appointments with the therapist during the week and then you always have homework. We will design a Home Exercise Program (HEP) with specific activities and exercises for you and your pet to complete at home.
