Pet Dental Care Means Good Pet Health

One of the most commonly overlooked areas, but so important to maintaining your pet’s good health, is quality oral and dental care. A regular routine of care for teeth above and below the gum line can dramatically extend the life of your pet. Harris Parkway Animal Hospital recommends preventive care as the key to maintaining your pet’s long-term oral health.

At every exam, your pet’s mouth will be thoroughly checked for:

  • Correct bite
  • Jaw injury
  • Abscesses
  • Gingivitis
  • Fractured teeth
  • Damage to enamel
  • Tartar and calculus build up

We will recommend the appropriate way to maintain or improve your pet’s oral health. He or she might need a professional cleaning for the teeth.

Teeth Cleaning Is Part of Your Pet’s Regular Routine

Regular dental prophylaxis (cleaning and polishing) helps assist in keeping your pet’s teeth and gums healthy. The teeth are ultrasonically scaled, removing tartar and calculus. The final step is polishing so that bacteria have no place to hide in your pet’s mouth. We are also happy to show you how to brush your pet’s teeth at home and may make other recommendations that can keep the teeth cleaner and healthier.

Anesthesia and Pain Relief

In surgical situations, we perform pre-anesthetic blood tests before we administer any anesthesia. General anesthesia ensures that your pet has no pain or anxiety and doesn’t move during the procedure. Your pet’s heart rate and temperature are monitored throughout, and a trained veterinary technician will stay with him or her throughout the treatment and during recovery.

Safety for your pet is our most important concern. As with any surgical procedure, an IV catheter is placed to deliver fluids for support, medication, and, if necessary, drugs that might be needed in an emergency. We constantly monitor the heart, breathing, tissue oxygenation, blood pressure, and carbon dioxide levels. We use the most up-to-date gas anesthesia available. Harris Parkway Animal Hospital gives pain-relieving medication before, during, and after any procedure to lessen discomfort and enable a quicker, more comfortable recovery.
